- Biography:
- Hello! I'm Prof. Chew. I'm a family doctor and professor who's enthusiastic about research, particularly in primary care, diabetes, and the exciting field of digital health, including AI in medicine. My main goal? To make research accessible and to support newcomers as they begin their journey. I've had the chance to lead research efforts, like at the Clinical Research Unit at UPM’s Hospital Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah, where I focused on creating an open and supportive culture for researchers. To help folks get started, I launched the RECRUS Research Newsletter and a Research Design Clinic – a space to help clinicians develop their research ideas. I've also written books, including an illustrated guide (https://goo.gd/6dso3, it is being updated with using digital and artificial intelligence tools and approaches), aimed at demystifying and elevating the quality of clinical research for healthcare professionals. My own research including my PhD on emotional distress in type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes and exploring AI's role in healthcare, have led to over 90 publications and recognition as a Top 2% Scientist in Clinical Medicine. I'm currently working on using AI tools/systems in primary medical care, responsible use and development of AI tools (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.14799133). More than anything, I enjoy guiding postgraduate students, family medicine trainees, and young academics. I'm also involved in international groups working to improve how research is done and assessed, always with an eye on supporting the next generation of researchers.
