Biography:
I am an associate professor of surgery based in Hawassa, Ethiopia, in the eastern part of Africa. I work as a clinician, a researcher, and an educator. I have worked in both rural and urban areas across the nation. I enjoy teaching and have been working as an assistant professor of surgery in different academic institutions, mostly at Hawassa University College of Medicine and Health Sciences. I have instructed general surgery residents and undergraduate medical students in this capacity. I am actively involved in research and have a keen interest in it. I currently serve as the national lead for four international collaborative projects: Alligator, MAGPIES, HIPPO, and GECKO. I also serve as the hospital lead for the national collaborative surgical outcome study, Ethio-SoS. Collaborative research projects in clinical and implementation research, global surgery, and quality improvement initiatives are of immense interest to me. I am very passionate about global surgery, and I am a GBD collaborator. I am an associate editor of the Ethiopian Journal of Medical and Health Sciences (EJMHS), a newly emerging journal owned by Hawassa University. I intend to advance my research skills, seeking any opportunities. In addition to my engagements at my university, I have a private clinical practice in one of the major private hospitals in Hawassa city, Yanet Hospitals. I have a passion for GI surgery, in particular, the colorectal stream. So I intend to pursue a subspecialty in colorectal surgery. My institution is a tertiary hospital in the region, Sidama Regional State of Ethiopia, serving a population of nearly 20 million, and there is no colorectal surgeon. Almost my entire surgical practice is open, but I am fascinated by minimally invasive surgeries. I am FLS-certified, and I have assisted and performed a few laparoscopic cholecystectomies. I had the opportunity to attend both a virtual and an in-person course on the fundamentals of robotic surgery in Oxford, United Kingdom. I believe in the significance of professional networks for career advancement and contribution to the community. So, I am a member of the Surgical Society of Ethiopia (SSE) and COSECSA, a fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and an affiliate member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and Edinburgh. I am also a member of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) and the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).
