- Biography:
- Dr. Maiga is a recently graduated physician who is most interested in clinical genetics and genomics. He was selected among several other medical students to complete his medical thesis in Dr. Landoure’s research group. His work focused on characterizing Malian patients/families with muscular dystrophies, specifically those with dystrophinopathies (DMD, BMD) and identifying their underlying genetic defects. His work has enrolled one of the largest clinically characterized cohort of patients/families with muscular dystrophies, and identified mutations in some families. Some of his results were presented in meetings in Africa and abroad, and are being published. His long-term goals are to establish the spectrum of these diseases in that part of Africa. According to Dr. Maiga and his collaborators, despite limited access to standard care in Africa may explain differential disease expression, it would be interesting to perform observational studies to determine factors leading to disease severity in Africa. Their challenge is to increase research capacity in their country and improve genetic healthcare delivery for patients with all kind of genetic diseases.
