Resource of the Week #166: Guidance on Collaborating in Research and Publication
Hello again. A few days ago, I spoke at a webinar. Another speaker was an author of a publication titled Collaboration and Team Science: A Field Guide. Because AuthorAID fosters mentoring and collaboration, I chose this guide as this week’s resource.
This guide has modules that one can read in any order. Among the modules are “Building a Research Team”, “Communicating About Science”, “Sharing Recognition and Credit”, “Handling Conflict”, and “Navigating and Leveraging Networks and Systems”.
The module “Sharing Recognition and Credit” includes the following advice relating to publications and presentations:
- “Establish as early as possible a process and criteria for determining how authorship and other forms of credit will be decided.”
- “In public presentations, identify team members and explicitly acknowledge their contributions to the research endeavor.”
Likewise, in the appendix, a template for collaborative agreements includes the following questions to address about credit:
- “What will be the criteria and the process for assigning authorship and credit?”
- “How will credit be attributed to each collaborator’s institution for public presentations, abstracts, and written articles?”
- “How and by whom will public presentations be made?”
- “How and by whom will media inquiries be handled?”
- “When and how will you handle intellectual property and patent applications?”
This guide, which includes case studies, is accessibly designed and easy to read. In fact, it won an award for clear communication. A good resource!
Until the next post—
