Resource of the Week #154: An Aid for Choosing and Using Training Methods

By Barbara Gastel | Mar. 23, 2014

Hello again. This week’s resource is a website called The Compass. It describes itself as “a repository of participatory learning, training and knowledge sharing methods”.

On this website, drop-down menus let you click on your learning or training aims. For example, the “Focus on learning” menu includes options such as “Demonstrate theoretical principles” and “Disseminate knowledge/publish content”.

Clicking on an aim will take you to a list of methods that can help achieve it. Then clicking on the name of a method will take you to guidance on using the method. You can also click on “See all methodologies” to access a list of all 60 methods discussed.

Information on each method appears in a standardized format. The standard sections are “Overview”, “When to use it (Aims)”, “How to apply it”, “Case study”, “Tips”, and “Resources”.

Among listed methods that might especially apply to sharing research information and teaching research communication are blogs, podcasting, presentations, and webinars. The information on the methods is practical and easy to read.

The Compass is from the International Training Centre of the ILO (International Labour Organization). I thank Peter Burnett and Julie Walker at INASP for mentioning this resource.

Until the next post—

Barbara
