Resource of the Week #151: ‘Scientific English for Hispanic Scientists’

Hello again. This week’s resource is a presentation by Dr. Daniel Limonta, of the Pedro Kourí Institute of Tropical Medicine (IPK), Havana, Cuba. The presentation, which is primarily for native speakers of Spanish, is on scientific English.

Dr. Limonta gave the presentation on February 20. Earlier, he had me peer review a draft of it. I was impressed and asked to include the final version in the AuthorAID Resource Library. I appreciate his letting me do so.

The presentation contains information on the following topics:

• what scientific English is and isn't
• English as the international language of science
• style, parallelism, and syntax
• types of declarative sentences
• problem words (such as at, in, and on, which native speakers of Spanish often mistakenly interchange)
• words and expressions to avoid
• Flesch-Kincaid readability tests and how to do them in Word

The many examples in the presentation help make it clear and interesting.

Although the presentation is primarily for native speakers of Spanish, much of it also can aid many other non-native speakers of English. In fact, some of the content also can be useful to native speakers of English.
