Resource of the Week #142: A Video on Scientific Writing
Hello again. As you may recall, last week’s resource consisted of 3 book chapters on scientific writing. In seeking background information on this resource, I found a video featuring the authors. This video is our current resource of the week.
This video, which is of a presentation, is titled “Strategies and Steps in Writing Journal Articles for International Submission”. The speakers are applied linguist Dr. Margaret Cargill and scientist Dr. Patrick O’Connor.
Early in the presentation, Cargill says to consider 4 things when writing a scientific paper. These 4 are the audience, the purpose, the format, and the assessment (that is, who will assess the paper and how).
Cargill discusses mainly the introduction, which is important for showing that research is new and significant. She identifies the components that an introduction should have. She also analyzes an introduction.
Then O’Connor talks about responding to editors’ and reviewers’ comments. He bases his remarks largely on analysis of correspondence regarding about 200 manuscripts. He identifies 7 categories of comments and discusses how best to respond.
The video runs about 50 minutes. The authors, who are from Australia, speak clearly and have readable slides. I recommend this video.
Until the next post—
