Resource of the Week #141: 3 Chapters on Scientific Writing

By Barbara Gastel | Dec. 22, 2013

Hello again. This week’s resource consists of 3 chapters on scientific writing. These chapters are from the book Writing Scientific Research Articles: Strategies and Steps.

This openly accessible set of chapters comes from the Wiley Chinese Scholars Network. The chapters are in English, like the rest of the book. However, translations of words or phrases into Chinese have been added in some places.

The first chapter of the 3 is on writing the introduction section of a scientific paper. The second is titled “A Process for Preparing a Manuscript”. The third is titled “Developing Discipline-Specific English Skills”.

This set of chapters is by 2 authors. One is an applied linguist. The other has degrees in the natural sciences.

The text of these chapters seems easy to read. Examples and exercises are included. Also, there is a checklist for reviewing the draft of a paper before revising it.

One section that might help many non-native users of English is on using English-language articles (a, an, and the). This section can aid in deciding which article, if any, to use.

Whatever your native language is, you might well find some helpful material in these chapters.

Until the next post—

Barbara
