Resource of the Week #128: An Openly Accessible Style Manual

By Barbara Gastel | Sep. 23, 2013

Hello again. Recently an instructor at another university sent me a list she had prepared of style guides and style manuals. I was pleased to see that a widely used general style manual in the list is openly accessible.

This style manual is the US Government Printing Office Style Manual, commonly known as the GPO style manual. In addition to being a style guide for government publications, this manual often serves as a general reference work.

One can download the manual as a PDF file. And one can download single chapters as PDF files or text. Chapters that might be of wide interest include those on capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. I like the fact that this manual contains many examples.

I’m glad that my tax dollars are used to help prepare such resources and that such resources are openly accessible. Some other US government resources that might aid many researchers are accessible at Science.gov.

Do you have openly accessible style manuals or other resources to suggest? If so, please either post a comment or contact me at bgastel@inasp.info. A resource that you mention might become a Resource of the Week.

Until the next post—

Barbara
