Resource of the Week #40: A Resource on Authorship

By Barbara Gastel | Jan. 12, 2012

Hello again. Perhaps you recall that last time and the time before, our resources of the week were about statistics.

These resources were popular, and I hope to feature more resources on statistics. However, not all AuthorAID members are interested in this topic. And there are many other important topics regarding research writing.

Therefore, as promised, this week I’m featuring a resource on another topic. The topic—authorship (in other words, which people to list as authors)—is important to almost everyone who reports research. I thank an AuthorAID community member for introducing me to this resource.

The resource, which is from the Committee on Publication Ethics (better known as COPE), is titled “How to Handle Authorship Disputes: A Guide for New Researchers”.

Actually, this resource is more general than its title suggests. It discusses not only authorship disputes but also other aspects of authorship. And it can help not only new researchers but also experienced ones.

This resource includes

    • advice on preventing authorship problems
    • suggestions on what to do if authorship problems occur
    • definitions of important terms relating to authorship, and discussion of the concepts represented by these terms

A good source of guidance!

Until the next post— Barbara
