Sentence of the Week #27

[From Michelle Yeoman and Barbara Gastel:]

Editing Solution: Sentence of the Week #26

As a reminder, last week's sentence was as follows:

She has a Master’s degree in anthropology.

The difficulty in this sentence regards capitalization. The word Master’s is not a proper noun and so should not be capitalized. Thus, the sentence should read as follows:

She has a master’s degree in anthropology.

The confusion might occur because abbreviations for academic degrees are capitalized. For example, one could write “She has an MA degree in anthropology” (meaning that she has a master of arts degree in this field).

By the way, whether to write master of arts or Master of Arts depends on the style that is used. Likewise, whether to say MA or M.A. depends on the style. If instructions are provided in these regards, remember to follow them. In any case, be consistent.

Now, onward to the new sentence.
