Resource of the Week #90: A Source of Free Online Courses

By Barbara Gastel | Dec. 30, 2012

Hello again. This week’s resource is a collection of free online courses. I've seen this resource mentioned in the AuthorAID discussion list and elsewhere.

This resource, which is called Coursera, contains online courses prepared in collaboration with universities in a variety of countries. Currently more than 200 courses, from more than 30 universities, are listed.

The courses are in a wide range of fields, including the natural sciences, the social sciences, the humanities, and the professions. I recognized some of the listed instructors as being people prominent in their fields.

Different Coursera courses start on different dates. Quite a few of the courses will start this winter. The dates appear in the course listings.

In some of the courses, successful participants can earn a letter of completion. However, the courses are not for academic credit.

Among the Coursera courses that might interest many AuthorAID members are various courses in statistics. There also has been a Coursera course on writing in the sciences.

Have you taken a Coursera course? If so, what was your experience? Please post a comment to let others of us know.

Until the next post—

Barbara
