The Course Grant (and More)

By Barbara Gastel | Mar. 06, 2011

Greetings again. You’re now reading a blog post written partly in America and partly in England. The reason?

I just arrived in England for AuthorAID’s annual project meeting. One of many things we’ll discuss is the grant to attend the summer research writing course at Texas A&M University.

As some of you know, the grant recipient has now been chosen. Deciding on a recipient was difficult, as there were about 100 applications for the grant, and many of them were good.

The members of the selection committee spent many hours reviewing and thinking about the applications. Eventually the committee chose the recipient . . .

. . . and found out who the recipient is. (To minimize bias, the names of the applicants had been removed from the applications.)

The recipient is Dr Haroon Mohamed Haniffa. Dr Haroon is a senior lecturer in chemistry at South Eastern University of Sri Lanka. His research is on the chemistry and biological activities of Sri Lankan seaweeds and associated microorganisms.

Dr Haroon says: “The INASP grant will provide me a great opportunity to attend the summer 2011 research writing course to further improve my academic career and research capabilities at the South Eastern University of Sri Lanka.”

We congratulate Dr Haroon. And we commend everyone who took the initiative to apply for the grant.

Because there was so much interest in the course at Texas A&M, we’ll share materials from it online this summer, so everyone can benefit. I’ll keep you posted.

Wishing you a good week— Barbara
