Resource of the Week #51: A New Resource on Preparing Proposals

By Barbara Gastel | Mar. 31, 2012

Hello again. A few days ago, Grand Challenges Canada announced “a new online proposal development resource”. I’m pleased to feature it as our Resource of the Week.

This resource has 3 parts: Advice from Applicants, Mechanics of Writing, and Perspectives of Mentors.

Advice from Applicants contains videos of advice from successful grant applicants. It also contains an example of a successful grant application.

I looked at some of the videos, and I think they give excellent guidance. Maybe I’ll show one or more of the shorter videos in some AuthorAID workshops.

Mechanics of Writing includes 2 PowerPoint presentations by Dr. Jocalyn Clark, who is a senior editor at the open access journal PLoS Medicine. It also includes 2 PowerPoint presentations from AuthorAID workshops—and a link to the AuthorAID website.

One presentation by Dr. Clark is on coping with writer’s block. The advice in it applies to doing many kinds of writing, not just to writing grant proposals.

In Perspectives of Mentors, researchers who are experienced in writing and reviewing grant proposals share their “top tips”. The materials in this part are videos.

I hope that many of you will consult this resource.

Until next time— Barbara
