Rising Scholars

A Milestone and More

By Barbara Gastel | Oct. 18, 2009

Greetings again. This week AuthorAID reached a milestone: The number of members reached 1000. We look forward to having the AuthorAID community continue to grow. Please join if you haven’t yet done so, and please encourage others to join.

Also this week, I learned of a resource that can help non-native speakers to write scientific papers in English. The resource is called Academic Phrasebank, and it lists phrases that can be suitable to use.

I learned of this resource from an American Medical Writers Association e-mail discussion list. So did AuthorAID member Sergio Lozano. Sergio then mentioned this resource in the AuthorAID e-mail discussion list.

Thanks, Sergio. I hope that AuthorAID members who haven’t yet joined this list will do so. And I hope that members of this list will share information about other resources.

My e-mail last week also included a message from AuthorAID member Roberto Tuda Rivas. Roberto said he had translated into Spanish the handout mentioned in last week’s blog post. With Roberto’s permission, I’ve added the translation to the AuthorAID Resource Library.

This time of year, conferences are keeping me especially busy. Yesterday I attended the National Association of Science Writers annual workshops. This week I’ll participate in the American Medical Writers Association annual conference.

I hope to share with you some highlights of these conferences. For now, I’ll just note a website, called Science 360 News Service, that was mentioned at one of yesterday’s workshops. If you like to read science news, you might find this site of interest.
