Spring-Break Greetings (and More)
Greetings again. It is now spring break at Texas A&M University, where I teach. Therefore the students have no classes this week.
Different students are spending spring break in different ways. Some students are visiting their families. Some are going to the beach or going skiing. Some are working on public-service projects. One of my students is receiving dental work.
I am spending spring break giving a workshop on scientific writing. This workshop is in Torreón, Mexico, at a campus of La Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila. Researchers from various parts of Mexico will attend.
Today the workshop organizer and I visited the workshop room. The room was excellent, and the equipment worked well. The workshop will resemble AuthorAID workshops, with lectures and small-group sessions.
Perhaps some future week I’ll say more about this workshop. Now, however, I’ll follow up on last week’s blog post, in which journalist Pius Sawa discussed presenting research in the popular media.
Some other sources of advice on presenting research to the public are
- “Communicating Science: Tools for Scientists and Engineers”, from the American Association for the Advancement of Science
- “Standing Up for Science: A Guide to the Media for Early Career Scientists”, produced in the United Kingdom
- the book Presenting Science to the Public, which now is openly accessible
Do you have resources to suggest on presenting research to the public? If so, please let us know by posting a comment.
And whether or not you now have a spring break, I wish you a good week.
