Resource of the Week #86: “Anatomy of a Publication”

By Barbara Gastel | Dec. 04, 2012

Hello again. This week I’m featuring a resource mentioned in the HIFA2015–Healthcare Information For All by 2015 e-mail discussion list.

This resource, titled “Anatomy of a Publication”, serves as a basic checklist for preparing annual reports, training manuals, and other freestanding publications. For each part of the publication, it lists items to include (or to consider including).

More specifically, the resource contains lists for each of the following: front cover, front matter, inside pages, back matter, and back cover.

Consulting this resource early in preparing a publication can help in planning. It can thus prevent having to hurry at the end to obtain needed items—or, worse yet, forgetting about items until too late.

Examples of listed items that one might tend to forget include logos, acknowledgments, appendixes, barcodes and ISBNs, and contact information. Items that are more basic also are listed.

“Anatomy of a Publication” both appears online and has a link to a PDF version, which is interactive. By passing one’s cursor over items listed on the PDF version, one can read further details—such a reminder to ensure that photos are of ample quality for print.

Until the next post—

Barbara
