Resource of the Week #55: Two Chapters from a New Book
Hello again. Recently I learned that a professor elsewhere in my university was publishing a book on doing academic writing. When I viewed the website for the book, I saw that 2 chapters from the book are openly accessible.
One openly accessible chapter (Chapter 2) is titled “Establish and Maintain the ‘Write’ Habit”. The other (Chapter 7) is titled “Exercises for Writing Introductions, Purpose Statements, or Specific Aims Sections”.
These chapters contain several exercises apiece. They also include research findings that support points the author is making.
Each of these chapters contains at least one “Tip for ESL [English as a Second Language] Writers”. A tip in Chapter 7 regards analyzing purpose statements and related items that others have written and using them as models.
The tip in Chapter 2 regards what to do if you are drafting something in English and cannot think of the English word to use. The author says to use the word in your native language and then, when you revise, substitute the English-language word.
That way, when you are drafting, you need not interrupt the flow of thoughts by searching for the English-language word. A good idea!
Until the next post—
