Resource of the Week #78: A Guide to a Research Career

By Barbara Gastel | Oct. 03, 2012

Hello again. Our resource this week was mentioned by AuthorAID team member Ravi Murugesan.

This resource is the book Charting a Course for a Successful Research Career: A Guide for Early Career Researchers, 2nd edition. This book can be read online. It also can be downloaded and saved. The file is about 2 megabytes.

This book, which was published last year, has 17 chapters, most of which are short. (In total, this book runs slightly more than 100 pages.) Chapters that especially relate to AuthorAID topics include the following:

            4. Selecting a Mentor

            7. Ethics and Research Integrity

            8. Choosing Your Publication’s Style and Format

            9. Where to Publish

            10. Preparing a Grant Funding Application

            12. Attending Conferences

Some other chapter titles are Research Collaboration, Society Membership, Applying for Fellowships, and Applying for a Job or Promotion.

The book is by Professor Alan M. Johnson. Professor Johnson is a former editor-in-chief of the International Journal for Parasitology. He has so many degrees that they occupy a line on the title page of the book.

Our thanks to the publisher, Elsevier, for making this book openly accessible.

Until the next post—

Barbara
