Call for Applications: Second Online Course in “Research Writing in Environmental Health”

By Ravi Murugesan | Aug. 05, 2013

Following the success of our first online course in writing up environmental health research for publication, we are going to run the second free online course on this topic. This course is a modified version of our generic research writing course, and we have developed it in collaboration with Blacksmith Institute, an international non-profit organization dedicated to solving pollution problems in low and middle-income countries.

Eligibility

This course is open to early-career researchers focusing on heavy metals, pesticides, radionuclides, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and other severe and persistent toxins.

Researchers focusing on the following are NOT eligible for this course: greenhouse gases or climate change impacts, adaptation or vulnerability; ambient air pollution; sewage and non-toxic municipal waste; biological or chemical oxygen demand (BOD and COD); noise pollution; and pollution which has no potential human health impact, or for which there is no pathway to humans.

To be eligible for the course, researchers must be citizens of, and research must relate to countries in WHO Mortality Stratum B-E (http://www.who.int/whr/2003/en/member_states_182-184_en.pdf).

Course schedule

The 5-week course will run from October 7 to November 10, 2013, and is entirely online. The course will be hosted on AuthorAID’s e-learning system (AuthorAID Moodle). There is no cost to apply or participate. Participants are expected to complete online lessons, engage in online discussion with classmates, and complete two short assignments including an abstract writing assignment. Successful participants will receive a completion certificate.

Before the course, participants are expected to complete the “AuthorAID information skills module”, a series of online lessons and activities that will also be available on AuthorAID Moodle. The information skills module will be available for 2 weeks between September 23 and October 6, 2013.

Participants should expect to spend about 8 hours in total on the information skills module (2 weeks long), and about 2 to 3 hours per week on the research writing course (5 weeks long).

The information skills module is a mandatory pre-course activity, and we hope that participants will be better informed about the research process as a result of it.

You can take a look at the course on AuthorAID Moodle. Click on the course name (Research Writing in Environmental Health – Batch 2) to see the course page. If you don't have an account on the system, you can see the course by clicking on the button "Login as a guest." The "Course Description" page, which is linked from the main course page, has detailed information on the course. You can also go through the “Learning Guidelines” lesson to get a feel of the course. At this point, the other lessons and the information skills module are not available.
