Resource of the Week #13: ACS Videos on Publishing Research

By Barbara Gastel | Jul. 11, 2011

Hello again! This week’s Resource of the Week is the new video series “Publishing Your Research 101: Practical Guidelines for Authors and Reviewers”.

This series comes from the American Chemical Society (ACS). However, it can help researchers in many fields.

Videos in the series are being released monthly. Thus far, 2 videos—each several minutes long—are available. Links to written materials accompany the videos.

The first video, titled “How to Write a Paper to Communicate Your Research”, features an interview with Harvard professor George M. Whitesides, who has published more than 1100 articles. Among aspects discussed are when to start writing up one’s research, how many drafts to write, and how important to consider titles and abstracts.

The second video, “Writing Your Cover Letter”, includes parts of interviews with 4 researchers who are journal editors. In addition to discussing some aspects of writing cover letters, this video contains some guidance on choosing a journal.

According to the series website, topics of future videos in the series will include suggesting reviewers, responding to comments from reviewers, and writing as a non-native English speaker. Keep watching!

Until the next post— Barbara
