Resource of the Week #138: Some Science-Communication Cartoons (and a Reminder about Permissions)

By Barbara Gastel | Dec. 01, 2013

Hello again. This week I’m featuring 2 websites that present science-related cartoons. Some of the cartoons regard communication of science.

Cartoons can be a valuable resource. Not only can they provide humorous relief. They also can present astute observations. Sometimes they communicate observations that tend to be too sensitive to express directly.

One of my favorite science-related cartoonists is Jorge Cham, of PHD Comics. His cartoons are popular with many graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Many of the most popular PHD Comics are about science communication.

Another favorite cartoonist is Sidney Harris. His website, Science Cartoons Plus, includes cartoons on many areas of science.

Some of the cartoons may require knowledge of American culture to understand. Many, however, are likely to be clear and interesting to researchers in any country. Indeed, the visual aspect of cartoons can help overcome language barriers.

Such cartoons are posted online for individual use. Using them in a publication or presentation requires obtaining permission from the cartoonist (and sometimes paying a fee). Fortunately, both websites have contact links that can be used to seek permission.

Hoping you’ll enjoy some of these thought-provoking cartoons!

Until the next post—

Barbara
