Resource of the Week #130: A Newly Published Journal Issue on Communication in Science

By Barbara Gastel | Oct. 06, 2013

Hello again. Our resource this week is a special issue of the journal Science. This issue, dated October 4, is titled “Communication in Science: Pressures and Predators”. It is openly accessible.

The issue contains articles on current aspects of communication in science. It also contains related podcasts. And it contains an infographic titled “How Much Science Is There? How Open Is It?”

One article reports a study in which a fake paper with major scientific flaws was submitted to more than 300 open-access journals. More than half accepted the paper. Often there was no sign of peer review.

Some other articles in the issue discuss the role of scientific conferences. One of these articles is on holding “cyber meetings” instead of meeting in person.

On a related topic: The issue includes articles about 2 researchers who are excellent speakers. There are links to videos of these researchers speaking, and there are suggestions from the researchers.

I’ve enjoyed starting to look at (and listen to) items in this special issue. And I plan to spend more time with it. If you’re interested in communication of research, I encourage you to access this issue too.

Until the next post—

Barbara
