From the 2013 Council of Science Editors Annual Meeting
Greetings again. I hope you’re doing well.
As previously mentioned, earlier this month I attended the 2013 Council of Science Editors (CSE) annual meeting. The meeting was in Montreal, Canada.
I enjoyed both attending sessions and talking with people at the meeting. Also, the meeting was a good chance to network for AuthorAID.
At the meeting, I took part in the session “International Boundaries, Publishing Barriers: Empowering Authors from Newly Industrialized and Developing Countries”. At the session, a speaker from Mexico and one from Canada discussed a writing course for Mexican researchers. Then I described 3 initiatives: a program I helped lead in China, an intensive course for Mexican researchers and others, and (of course) AuthorAID.
Some other sessions that I attended were those titled “Transforming Journal Content for the Public’s Use”, “The New Science Communication Climate”, “Communicating through Media: From Journal Page to Center Stage”, and “Copy Editing in the 21st Century”.
As usual, the meeting included an awards luncheon. This year’s recipient of CSE’s highest award was Charlotte Haug, editor of the Journal of the Norwegian Medical Association. She was recognized for her work with COPE (the Committee on Publication Ethics), which she helped globalize.
Lists of sessions from recent CSE annual meetings appear online. In a few months, links to many presentations from the 2013 annual meeting will be added to the 2013 list. (Such links already exist for previous years.) If you are interested, please keep watching.
Until the next post—
