Resource of the Week #69: The GCC-NLM Professional Development Repository

By Barbara Gastel | Aug. 04, 2012

Hello again. Our current Resource of the Week is a collection of resources helpful in pursuing research careers. Many of the resources regard communication.

The collection is titled the GCC-NLM Professional Development Repository. (GCC stands for Gulf Coast Consortia. NLM is the National Library of Medicine.)

The resources, which include written materials and videos, address many topics. Some of the resources are from the GCC or NLM. Others are from other sources.

Here are some of the topics of resources in this repository:

  • developing a laboratory
  • writing effective e-mail messages
  • mentoring
  • writing grant proposals
  • networking at conferences
  • writing scientific papers
  • preparing CVs and resumes
  • writing letters
  • preparing for interviews
  • managing one’s time

Distinctive resources in the repository include an article on chairing conference sessions. This article (which comes from the Nature Publishing Group resource Scitable) is readably written and contains much good advice. I especially like the examples in it.

The GCC-NLM repository was developed primarily for advanced trainees in biomedical informatics. However, most of the resources in it are equally relevant to researchers in other fields. I encourage you to look at this repository.

Until the next post—
