Sentence of the Week #26

[From Michelle Yeoman and Barbara Gastel:]

Editing Solution: Sentence of the Week #25

As a reminder, last week's sentence was as follows:

We should hire the applicant that has the most education.

In this sentence, it would be advisable to replace the word that with the word who. Thus, the improved sentence reads as follows:

We should hire the applicant who has the most education.

At least in general, the relative pronoun that should be used to refer to objects, not people. (Example: We should buy the book that is most informative.)

Using the word who, rather than the word that, to refer to people tends to be more respectful. Perhaps something to remember when you write about your friends, your supervisor, or the head of a granting agency!

Now, onward to the new sentence.

Sentence of the Week #26

Welcome to the newest installment in this series.

Our sentence this week is as follows:

She has a Master's degree in anthropology.

One small change would make this sentence more standard. Please make this change, and submit the revised sentence and any remarks as a comment on this post.

We plan to provide the solution as a comment in about 2 days, as well as including it in the next Sentence of the Week post.
