A Good Magazine Is Ending

By Barbara Gastel | Oct. 09, 2011

Greetings again. I hope that all is going well for you.

Today I read some disappointing news: that the magazine The Scientist was stopping publication. This magazine, which has been largely for researchers in biological fields, had just celebrated its 25th anniversary.

According to the report I read, The Scientist was closing for economic reasons. The publisher is quoted as saying, “We simply could not find a way to make it pay.”

I’m especially sorry that this publication is ending, because

    • The Scientist has included good non-technical overviews of research.
    • Many articles in The Scientist have been geared to early-career researchers.
    • The Scientist has included articles providing advice on communicating science.

At least for now, the website of The Scientist still is active. Some relatively recent Scientist articles on science-communication topics are the following:

I encourage you to access one or more of these articles if you can.

Wishing you a good week— Barbara
