A Good Magazine Is Ending
Greetings again. I hope that all is going well for you.
Today I read some disappointing news: that the magazine The Scientist was stopping publication. This magazine, which has been largely for researchers in biological fields, had just celebrated its 25th anniversary.
According to the report I read, The Scientist was closing for economic reasons. The publisher is quoted as saying, “We simply could not find a way to make it pay.”
I’m especially sorry that this publication is ending, because
- The Scientist has included good non-technical overviews of research.
- Many articles in The Scientist have been geared to early-career researchers.
- The Scientist has included articles providing advice on communicating science.
At least for now, the website of The Scientist still is active. Some relatively recent Scientist articles on science-communication topics are the following:
- “Showcase Your Science: Tips for creating a science video or website”
- “Poster Perfect: How to drive home your science with a visually pleasing poster”
- “Simplifying Teaching: How to make your teaching more efficient, effective, and enjoyable without slighting your lab projects”
- “Right your Writing: How to sharpen your writing and make your manuscripts more engaging”
- “Why Trust a Reporter? What science writers are looking for and why it behooves you to answer their calls”
I encourage you to access one or more of these articles if you can.
Wishing you a good week— Barbara
