Resource of the Week #63: The Directory of Open Access Books

By Barbara Gastel | Jun. 24, 2012

Hello again. Some 30 weeks ago, our Resource of the Week was the Directory of Open Access Journals. More recently, I heard of the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). This directory will be our current Resource of the Week.

DOAB is a young resource. It was launched earlier this year, and it still is in a beta version. In April, it included about 750 books, from about 20 publishers. It now has 1095 books, from 27 publishers.

The listed books are peer-reviewed scholarly works. Some are quite specialized. They are in a variety of academic fields. Some are in languages other than English.

In the directory, you can do searches.  Or you can browse by title, subject, or publisher.  When you find a book that might be of interest, you can access it via a link.

In the coming months, those in charge of the directory plan to do research to find out more about users’ needs. You can learn about the research and other items by subscribing (on the DOAB homepage) to the DOAB newsletter.

I hope to see this resource continue to grow and develop.

Until the next post—

Barbara
