Resource of the Week #116: A Resource on Manuscript Review and Publication
Hello again. This week’s resource is a presentation that answers a common question: “I submitted my manuscript. Now what happens to it?”
The presentation is by Leslie Neistadt, managing editor of the Journal of Athletic Training. Leslie gave this presentation at a conference, and she shared it with me to use in AuthorAID.
The presentation starts by noting the first steps that occur when the journal receives a manuscript. These include
- giving the manuscript an identification number,
- ensuring that the manuscript is complete and in the right format, and
- informing the author that the manuscript was received.
Next the presentation describes the peer review and decision processes at the Journal of Athletic Training. These processes differ somewhat among journals. However, the basic aspects generally are the same.
Finally, the presentation describes the production process that occurs after a manuscript is accepted. This process includes editing the text and any tables and figures. It also includes reviewing proofs.
A nice feature is that this presentation contains examples of e-mail messages from the journal. For confidentiality, names of puppets or other characters appear instead of real authors’ names.
Thank you, Leslie, for sharing this presentation.
Until the next post—
Barbara
