Resource of the Week #17: One Look—but Many Dictionaries
Hello again! This week’s resource provides definitions from many dictionaries.
The resource is called OneLook Dictionary Search. To use it, type an English-language word in the space provided. Then click “Search”. Then OneLook searches multiple dictionaries and provides the definitions it obtains.
For example, when I typed “resource” and clicked “Search”, OneLook provided 45 definitions. Most were from general dictionaries. Others were from specialized dictionaries, such as business dictionaries and medical dictionaries.
Near some of the definitions, one can click on a symbol and hear the word.
I’ve bookmarked this resource on my computer, and I use it often. Some people are surprised that as a native speaker of English, I use English-language dictionaries a lot. To me, though, it’s not surprising.
English is a big language, and I often see or hear new words. Reading 2 or more definitions helps me understand and remember the words. Even if a word is relatively familiar, I sometimes check the meaning or pronunciation.
Whether English is your native language or not, I encourage you to look at OneLook.
Until the next post— Barbara
