Thanksgiving Thoughts

By Barbara Gastel | Nov. 27, 2010

Greetings again. I hope you’re doing well.

Thursday was the American holiday Thanksgiving. On this day, people in the United States give thanks for the good things in their lives.

Last year and the year before, I was working in other countries on Thanksgiving. Although I love travel, I was glad to be home this year on the holiday. (Speaking of travel: Accompanying this post is a photo from my recent trip to Brazil.)

This Thursday generally wasn’t a holiday outside the United States. Thus, in the morning I participated in some AuthorAID conference calls.

In the afternoon, though, I made a traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Then some of my graduate students—from China, India, and Spain—came over to have Thanksgiving dinner with my husband and me.

The main dish was turkey (a type of large bird traditionally eaten on Thanksgiving). Side dishes included mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, a rice dish, bread, cranberry sauce, and a green salad. For dessert we had pumpkin cake, brownies, and grapes.

I have much to be thankful for: good health, a good family, fine friends and colleagues, a comfortable home, plenty to eat, interesting work, and more.

I’m especially thankful to be working with AuthorAID. And before closing, let me introduce something new that will appear in the News & Updates section of the AuthorAID website:

Starting in a few days, AuthorAID graduate assistant Bernard Appiah plans to post a Tip of the Week the middle of each week. Please be watching for it!

Wishing you a good week— Barbara
