From the 2013 Intensive Course in Research Writing

By Barbara Gastel | Jul. 22, 2013

Greetings again. I hope you’re doing well.

My recent activities have included teaching the 2013 Texas A&M University Intensive Course in Research Writing. The course met daily for 3 weeks, from June 24 through July 12.

The class had members from a variety of countries. As in the past, researchers came from Mexico to attend. We also had a participant from Cuba. Texas A&M graduate students taking the course included natives of India, Korea, Syria, Taiwan, and the United States.

Class members also came from a variety of academic disciplines. Among the fields represented were education, genetics, materials science, microbiology, public health, sociology, and tourism science.

The intensive course was a team effort.  In particular:

  • Dr. Roberto Tuda, from Mexico, handled many administrative items and gave instruction on EndNote.
  • Dr. Colin Young provided written and oral feedback on participants’ drafts.
  • Dr. Weston Porter gave a lecture and demonstration on giving presentations.
  • Ms. Michelle Yeoman helped in the computer lab and reviewed drafts.
  • Members of the office staff and audiovisual staff supplied support.

Thanks, all!

I’ve placed the course syllabus and the main lecture slides in the AuthorAID Resource Library. Please feel free to use these materials for self-study.

Feel free also to use or adapt these materials for your own teaching. Although the materials are from an intensive course, they’re also suitable for courses of other intensities and lengths.

We’re now starting to plan next year’s intensive course. It is to run from 23 June through 11 July 2014. We hope that some of you will attend.

Until the next post—

Barbara
