Resource of the Week #76: Another Resource on Ethics

By Barbara Gastel | Sep. 23, 2012

Hello again. This week’s resource is another one to help researchers avoid ethical problems. Recently an AuthorAID community member mentioned this resource. So did a research dean whom I know.

The resource, which is from the publisher Elsevier, is a website titled Ethics in Research & Publication. The website includes

  • an ethics quiz (plus answers)
  • an “ethics toolkit” containing
    • fact sheets on duplicate submission, research fraud, and plagiarism
    • a poster titled “Top 5 reasons to publish ethically”
    • a series of short video clips
  • links to ethics resources from other providers
  • a section for requesting answers to questions

The resource also includes materials to help editors deal with ethical issues.

Colorful, sometimes humorous drawings enliven some parts of this website. One drawing, though, worried me a little: In it, a researcher appears to be handling a flask of green liquid near a coffee cup.

I realize that these drawings are meant mainly to be decorative and symbolic. Of course, researchers should keep harmful substances away from food and drink.

I thank the colleagues who mentioned this resource. Do you have resources to suggest? If so, please let me know.

Until the next post—

Barbara
