Resource of the Week #28: From Three Organizations for Writers

By Barbara Gastel | Oct. 20, 2011

Hello again. I’m releasing this post while at the American Medical Writers Association (AMWA) annual conference.

In the United States, October is a popular time for conferences. Some reasons: In October here, the weather usually is good for travel, few people are away on vacation, and there are few major holidays.

Some organizations holding conferences around now are AMWA, the National Association of Science Writers (NASW), and the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ).

Given the overlapping dates, one can’t attend all 3 conferences. However, even if one can't attend any of the conferences, one can benefit from all 3 organizations by using their websites.

These websites include many openly accessible items for people interested in writing about research. For example:

  • The AMWA website contains a helpful links section. One link is to a set of 49 articles, from the journal Chest, on medical writing and related topics.
  • The NASW website includes conference reports. Thus, even those of us who can’t attend the conference can learn some of the main points presented.
  • The SEJ website includes links to good blogs on environmental topics and has a Spanish-language section.

Take a virtual trip by visiting one or more such sites!

Until the next post— Barbara
