Resource of the Week #94: A Writing Guide for Engineers and Others

By Barbara Gastel | Jan. 27, 2013

Hello again. This week’s resource is from IEEE, which describes itself as "the world's largest professional association for the advancement of technology".

Originally IEEE (pronounced “Eye-triple-E”) stood for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. But IEEE has grown to include many members in other, related areas. Thus it now rarely uses its full name.

IEEE has produced a variety of resources to promote effective communication in technical fields. These resources include the 28-page guide How to Write for Technical Periodicals & Conferences.

This easy-to-read guide includes information on many aspects of writing and publication. Among sections that might interest many AuthorAID members are those on

  • ethics in scientific publication
  • deciding whether to present at a conference or write a journal article
  • identifying conferences and journals suitable for one’s work
  • developing a manuscript
  • revising
  • peer review

The section on revising an article includes tips for non-native speakers of English.

This guide is interactive, with links to other resources. It also contains an appendix listing online resources for authors. These resources can especially help researchers who want to write articles for journals published by IEEE.

Until the next post—

Barbara
