Translations by a Longtime Mentee

Greetings again. I hope that all is going well for you.

As you might have seen, the AuthorAID Resource Library now has more Chinese translations. The new translations are by Professor Fan Xiaohui (Sophie Fan), a visiting scholar from China. I look forward to her translating more AuthorAID materials while here.

Sophie, whose field is English, is sort of a longtime mentee of mine. Let me tell you the story.

From 1998 to 2000, Sophie was in a program that helped Chinese faculty members learn to edit research articles and teach scientific writing. In 1999, as part of the program, Sophie did a 3-month internship under my supervision.

I coordinated the US aspect of the program, and graduates of it and I keep in touch. Many Chinese translations in the AuthorAID Resource Library are by graduates of the program.

About 2 years ago, Sophie told me she hoped to seek funding to be a visiting scholar. I agreed to host her if she obtained the funding. Despite heavy competition, she received a scholarship from the Chinese government to spend a year here.

Sophie, who is an associate professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University, arrived in September. While in the United States, she is conducting research, observing classes, and doing related work.

We are fortunate that Sophie, who is an experienced editor and translator, is translating materials for AuthorAID. Are there AuthorAID items that you would like translated into Chinese? If so, please let me know. Maybe Sophie can translate them.
