Resource of the Week #54: Some Resources Regarding Journal Covers

Hello again. When looking at journals, we usually focus on the research articles. However, the journal cover (or its online equivalent) can be worth mentioning.

Different journals have different kinds of covers. The covers of some journals contain mainly the journal title. The covers of some others show the table of contents. And the covers of other journals have images on them.

Many journal covers feature images from research reported in that issue. Having an image from one’s research appear on a journal cover is considered an honor. Some people list it on their curriculum vitae (CV).

Often, journals’ instructions to authors (which are important resources in many regards) say how to submit images for potential use on the cover. Editorial offices of journals also can provide this information.

Finally, some journals feature artwork, such as paintings, on their covers. Sometimes essays about the art appear in the journal.

A recent podcast discusses the artwork on the covers of the journal Emerging Infectious Diseases. And an article profiles the person who has chosen and written about most of the cover art for the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).
