Guest Post: Introducing “Sentence of the Week” and Its Author

By Barbara Gastel | Aug. 19, 2012

[The following guest post is from Michelle Yeoman, a graduate student at Texas A&M University. Michelle had a great idea for a new weekly series in the AuthorAID blog. Below, Michelle introduces herself and the series. Thanks, Michelle! —Barbara]

I am a graduate student in the science and technology journalism program. My goal is to be active in science communication by editing scientific articles and by writing for the public about science.

Before joining this program, I earned a master’s degree in biology from Texas A&M University. My research focused on genetics and RNA interference. My coursework included classes in cell signaling and differentiation, genomics, biochemistry, and cellular biology.

While earning my master’s degree, I found that I enjoy learning about research more than doing research myself. I love the stories behind great scientific research.

I was fortunate to discover the science and technology journalism master’s program. I love being in an academic program that blends science and language. This fall marks my second semester in the program.

I recently helped with the 2012 intensive course in research writing. It was wonderful to meet scientists from around the world and learn about their research.

Starting in a few days, I plan to add to the AuthorAID website a series titled “Sentence of the Week”. Each week this series will feature a new sentence that would benefit from editing. Members of the AuthorAID community will be encouraged to edit the sentence and post their edited versions in the comments section. Possible editing solutions will be discussed the next week.

I look forward to participating in AuthorAID and helping in any way that I can.
