This 6-week online course Getting started with your research writing and publishing will help you build your confidence and skills to publish your first research paper.  

Our tried and tested online course has been constantly developed over the last decade to tackle the emerging challenges that global majority researchers navigate throughout their academic careers.  

This year we updated the content to cover Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how you can use AI responsibly within your research writing workflow.

The course topics include:  

  • Understanding previous research 

  • The ethics of research  

  • Preparing to write 

  • Writing your research paper 

  • Proceeding to publication 

The course involves:  

  • Networking opportunities 

  • Webinars and discussion forums opportunities to share your expertise and ask questions of thousands of researchers around the world

  • Reflective assignment to develop your writing style and peer marking opportunities so you can learn from fellow researchers' contexts around the world

 

If you complete the course and assignments, you will unlock a certificate and learners who complete each week’s activities will gain a digital badge.  

The course starts in 28th October 2025 and will finish on 9th December 2025.

Frequently asked questions 

Can I learn on a mobile?  

  • Yes, you can use the Moodle mobile app 

 

I have unstable internet; will the course work for me? 

  • We try to design our materials in text format to be as low bandwidth as possible, there are optional videos and reading tasks on external websites 

  • You can download the learning materials to work offline too 

 

I am very busy and am not sure I have enough time to complete the course 

  • We understand researchers have many commitments including teaching, research, and dedicating time for your own learning and development 

  • Live sessions are optional and can be watched back as recordings 

  • Week 6 is a wrap up week to catch up on activities if you have missed any 

  • We estimate you will need 4-6 hours a week to complete the activities and week 4 is a particularly busy week 

 

I have taken the course before or am not really new to publishing papers, can I still join?  

  • You will learn something new every time you reflect on your writing style and process 

  • There is a particularly useful session on navigating rejections 

  • This year our new content on AI will be new to everyone whether you have taken the course before or not
