Back from the Sigma Xi Meeting
Greetings again. I hope that all is going well for you.
A few days ago, I returned from the annual meeting of the scientific research society Sigma Xi. The meeting was in North Carolina, a lovely part of the United States. The leaves on the trees were turning beautiful autumn colors.
The Sigma Xi meeting had several components. One component was a student research conference. It included nearly 300 poster presentations by graduate, undergraduate, and high school students.
Other components included a symposium on food safety and security, some administrative meetings, and open lectures. There also were exhibits, luncheons, and a banquet.
I gave one of the open lectures. In keeping with the Sigma Xi motto, “Companions in Zealous Research”, I titled my lecture “Communicating with Multiple Audiences: A Companion to Zealous Research”.
Near the end of my lecture, I mentioned AuthorAID and showed photos from AuthorAID workshops. People seemed quite interested.
Speaking of companions to research: The Sigma Xi website can be a fine companion for researchers. Parts that might especially interest AuthorAID members include
- “Science in the News”, which contains science news articles from various publications
- “Science Resources”, which has several sections of possible interest, including one titled “International Resources”
- the website of the magazine American Scientist, which includes some articles that are openly accessible
- the American Scientist “Bookshelf” section, which has book reviews and related content
Another good resource!
Wishing you a good week— Barbara
