Resource of the Week #10: Books Free Online from the National Academies Press

By Barbara Gastel | Oct. 24, 2011

Hello again! The current Resource of the Week is really more than 4,000 resources. Let me tell you the story.

Perhaps you’ve heard of the (US) National Academies (the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council). The National Academies are “private, nonprofit institutions that provide expert advice on . . .  challenges facing the nation and the world”.

Members of the National Academies include many prominent researchers. Election to the National Academies is a high honor.

The National Academies prepare reports on important topics. These reports are published by the National Academies Press (NAP), which has pioneered making content available free online.

The NAP first provided some content free online in 1994. As of recently, all NAP books in PDF versions were free to download in developing countries, and 65% were free to all users.

On June 2, the NAP made an exciting announcement: The PDF versions of all its books can now be downloaded by anyone free of charge.

I encourage you to look at the NAP website. At least 1 of the more than 4,000 books might interest you!

Until the next post— Barbara
