New Travel-Grant Recipients Announced

By Barbara Gastel | Sep. 08, 2013

We are pleased to announce the newest recipients of AuthorAID travel grants. They are Dr. Lumbini Roy, of Bangladesh, and Dr. Muhammad Tehseen Azhar, of Pakistan.

Dr. Roy is a communication specialist at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research. She will attend the 20th Canadian Conference on Global Health, to be held 27 to 29 October 2013 in Ottawa, Canada.

At the conference, Dr. Roy will present a poster about availability of emergency obstetric and newborn-care services at public facilities in Bangladesh.

Dr. Roy noted that she belongs to an indigenous community that is less advanced than most of Bangladesh. She said her work “will motivate the other indigenous students to come forward in public health research and work further for the population living at the fringe".

Dr. Azhar is a lecturer in the Department of Plant Breeding and Genetics, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. He will attend the International Plant Breeding Congress to be held 10 to 14 November 2013 in Antalya, Turkey.

At the congress, Dr. Azhar will give an oral presentation about his research on resistance gene analogs in Gossypium arboreum (tree cotton). This research may aid in developing disease-resistant cotton plants.

Dr. Azhar, who has 3 doctoral and 10 master’s students, said that attending the conference will help him to guide his students. He also said it may lead to useful contacts and collaborations.

AuthorAID received about 60 applications for this set of travel grants. We congratulate the recipients and commend all applicants for their initiative.
