AuthorAID Online Journal Clubs update – still opportunities to join!

By Andy Nobes | May. 07, 2019

AuthorAID Online Journal Clubs update – still opportunities to sign up to learn more about reading, writing and analysing the latest research papers.

The AuthorAID online journal clubs are now two months old (see previous news annoucement here). We’ve had some really interesting discussions so far, discussing papers in a variety of thematic areas and learning together about skills in statistics, writing keywords and titles, critically analysing a paper, plagiarism, and reference management software, amongst other topics! The groups have also arranged regular live presentations and discussions using the Zoom platform, which are recorded for those who cannot make the sessions.

There are currently three very active clubs, a fourth which is being relaunched, and a fifth new club that is being launched today. The AuthorAID online journal clubs are open to everyone, whether you are an experienced academic/scientist, or an early-career researcher, or anybody interested in the topic of the club!

You are free to join as many groups as they wish as there are many cross cutting topics. Participants with applicable expertise can also volunteer to co-facilitate or be resource persons at live sessions. More information below:

  • Environmental Biology, Chemistry & Toxicology (Hosted on WhatsApp)
So far the group has discussed papers on: method validation and evaluation of household processing on reduction of pesticide residues in tomato; the response of Grain Legumes to Phosphorus Application; and responses of embryo-larval zebrafish exposed to types I and II pyrethroids.

New (re)launches – you are also invited to the following journal clubs which should be of general interest to many researchers:

  • Education and Research Communication (Hosted on Slack and AuthorAID forums)
This group is for those interested in education, pedagogy and teaching, as well as communicating your research – so it is relevant to most researchers who teach students and want to promote their research. So far, the group has discussed papers on the key features of effective active learning, and student-centered curricula.
To join, please join the slack channel here

  • Library Information Sciences & Bibliometrics Journal Club (Hosted on WhatsApp and AuthorAID forums). This group is for those interested in Library Information Sciences (LIS), bibliometrics, scientometrics, scholarly publishing and knowledge production
To join, please click on this link (requires WhatsApp mobile or desktop app). If you have problems joining, please email your mobile phone number via this link

The groups are led by AuthorAID associates and mentors.

We look forward to seeing you in the journal clubs! If you have any questions, please post them below
