Resource of the Week #83: A Resource for Veterinary and Other Authors

By Barbara Gastel | Nov. 12, 2012

Hello again. Recently, while seeking a journal’s instructions to authors, I came across an online guide to writing about veterinary research.

Because my main faculty position is at a college of veterinary medicine and biomedical sciences, I was very happy to find this resource. I was even happier to see that most of the advice also applies to writing in other fields.

This recently issued 24-page guide, which is from the publisher Wiley-Blackwell, includes major sections with the following titles:

  • A Good Manuscript Starts with Good Science
  • Types of Scientific Articles
  • Selecting a Journal
  • Writing Your Article
  • Writing (in English) for Readability and Comprehension
  • Submitting Your Manuscript
  • Understanding the Peer Review and Editorial Processes
  • Publication Ethics

Useful tables appear in the guide. One is on factors to consider when choosing a journal. Another is on avoiding common problems in organizing a paper. A third is a checklist for submitting a manuscript.

The guide ends with a list of resources. I was glad to see AuthorAID listed.

Especially if you are in veterinary research or a related field, I encourage you look at this resource.

Until the next post—

Barbara
