Some Writing-Related Days and Weeks

By Barbara Gastel | Mar. 06, 2016

Greetings again. I hope you’re doing well.

Here in the United States, last Friday (March 4) was National Grammar Day. And this Tuesday (March 8) is National Proofreading Day.

Such days aren’t official national holidays. Rather, they’re days that some people designate for publicizing certain subjects. Often, the people who organize such days provide related resources.

Resources from writing-related days can help ensure that writing is of high quality. An earlier post highlighted resources from National Punctuation Day (September 24). What about National Grammar Day and National Proofreading Day?

This year National Grammar Day was hosted by Mignon Fogarty, who writes a popular blog called Grammar Girl. Her Grammar Day webpage contains links to a variety of resources. These resources include an editing checklist with links to explanations of items in it.

The Proofreading Day website doesn’t seem to be as up-to-date. However, it too has links to resources. Also, the AuthorAID Resource Library includes resources on proofreading. Now might be a good time to access them.

There also are weeks focusing on subjects related to research communication. For example, Fair Use/Fair Dealing Week was February 22–26. The term fair use or fair dealing refers to conditions under which copyrighted material can be used without obtaining permission.

Looking ahead: International Open Access Week 2016 will be October 24–30. The website for Open Access Week remains active throughout the year. It’s a good source of information about open access.

Do you know of other days or weeks relating to research communication? If so, please post a comment.

Until the next post—

Barbara
