- Biography:
- Dr. Chidiebere Emmanuel Okechukwu, PhD, FRSPH, is a Nigerian-born healthcare scientist, public health researcher, and clinical echocardiographer whose career spans continents, disciplines, and communities. Born on July 1, 1992, in Aba, Nigeria, and originally from Ugwuoba in Enugu State, his journey from a curious student of physiology to a globally recognised scholar and clinician is marked by relentless pursuit of knowledge, compassion for patients, and a commitment to health equity. His formative years were shaped by a deep curiosity about the human body and a desire to understand the mechanisms of health and diseases. This intellectual spark led him to Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Nigeria, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Human Physiology in 2015. His undergraduate studies focused on cardiovascular physiology, laying the foundation for what would become a lifelong dedication to heart health and preventive medicine. After completing his degree, he sought to expand his horizons beyond Nigeria. In 2019, he enrolled at the University of Rome Tor Vergata in Italy, where he earned a Master of Science in Physical Activity and Health Promotion. His research there centred on cardiac rehabilitation and the role of exercise in cardiovascular recovery in patients with gambling addiction. This period was transformative, exposing him to interdisciplinary approaches and international collaborations that would shape his future work. Having worked for one year as a therapeutic care support worker in the hospital-to-home team at Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, he explored how structured physical activity could reduce rehospitalisation rates and improve quality of life for patients with chronic heart conditions. Driven by a desire to address broader public health challenges, Dr Okechukwu pursued a PhD in Public Health, Microbiology, and Infectious Diseases at Sapienza University of Rome, one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious institutions. He completed his doctorate in 2023, specialising in epidemiology and occupational health. His dissertation focused on the impact of circadian rhythm disruption on mental health among nurses working night shifts—a topic of growing concern, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. His research revealed significant associations between sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, and occupational exhaustion among healthcare workers, contributing valuable insights to the field of occupational health and mental wellness. In 2024, he furthered his clinical expertise by earning a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Echocardiography with Distinction from the University of the West of England. This advanced training equipped him with the skills to perform transthoracic echocardiography, a non-invasive imaging technique critical for diagnosing cardiovascular conditions. His proficiency in echocardiography became a cornerstone of his clinical practice, allowing him to deliver precise and timely diagnoses that improve patient outcomes. Currently, Dr Okechukwu serves as a healthcare scientist at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust in the United Kingdom. In this role, he applies his echocardiographic expertise to assess and manage cardiovascular conditions, contributing to the hospital’s mission of delivering high-quality cardiac care. His work bridges the gap between clinical diagnostics and public health strategy, embodying a holistic approach to healthcare.Beyond his clinical and academic achievements, Dr Okechukwu has made significant contributions to research and advocacy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH), a recognition of his impact on health education, policy, and research. He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, covering topics such as infectious disease epidemiology, cardiovascular risk prevention, mental health, and culturally informed public health interventions. His publications are widely cited and have been presented at global health conferences, influencing both clinical practice and public policy. As a visiting research scholar in Canada, Dr Okechukwu collaborated with the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary, where he moderated and supervised community-based exercise rehabilitation programmes for cancer patients and post-treatment survivors. These initiatives, known as the ACE (Alberta Cancer Exercise) and EXCEL (Exercise for Cancer to Enhance Living Well) programmes, aimed to improve physical function, mental wellbeing, and overall quality of life through structured physical activity. His involvement in these programmes demonstrated his commitment to translational research and community engagement. As a visiting researcher at the College of Nursing, University of Saskatchewan, he led the study titled Lifestyle behaviours among Canadian nurses working night shifts in the COVID-19 era: a pilot study. Dr Okechukwu is fluent in English, Italian, and Igbo. He is a Christian and married.
