Biography:
Abdul-Azeez A. Anjorin (PhD, MNYA), a certified ProMED-EpiCore health professional for infectious disease surveillance is the current Head of Department of Microbiology, a Senior Lecturer & Medical Virologist at the Lagos State University; He is the Team Lead/ Principal Investigator, Influenza & Other Respiratory Tract Viruses (IORTV) research in the Department of Microbiology. He also serves as the Coordinator and Principal Investigator, African Infectious Disease Multidisciplinary Research and Grant (AFIDMURG) Group. He graduated with M.Sc. in Medical Microbiology with Distinction in Virology research, before spending over 6 years researching on Influenza virus for his PhD at the College of Medicine and School of Postgraduate of the University of Lagos. Dr. AbdulAzeez had part of his training at the WHO-reference Laboratory, Luxembourg Institute of Health. He was also trained at the International Society for Influenza and Other Respiratory Viruses (ISIRV)/ Christian Medical College (CMC) Respiratory Virus School in Vellore, India; He was awarded the Global Virus Network (GVN) training in Virology at the Institute of Human Virology, University of Maryland School of Medicine; Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore; and National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA. He was also trained at the Bacterial and Viral Bioinformatics Resource Center (BV-BRC), Argonne National Laboratory, University of Chicago, Lemont, Illinois. He has presented papers in different countries in Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, attending over 50 conferences/ workshops including different WHO functions like the WHO R&D Consultation: Remaining knowledge gaps for Monkeypox vaccines, (2022); WHO Consultation on COVID vaccines research: Advancing the development of pan-sarbecovirus vaccines (2022), and WHO R&D Blueprint Consultation- COVID-19 Global research & innovation forum (2022); Also, the Africa CDC Stakeholder Engagement Summit on Partnership for Vaccine Manufacturing (2021). Dr. AbdulAzeez sits on the Editorial board of PLOS ONE journal as an Academic Editor; an International Editor (Associate) of the Pan-African Medical Journal; and an Associate Editor/ Editorial Board Secretary of the Journal of Research and Review in Science. He was elected as the General Secretary of the Nigerian Young Academy (NYA) and has served as the Moderator, Series 3.1 on Genomics and translational research in Africa: Local Vaccine production; and the Nigerian Molecular Laboratory Network in 2022. He is a member of the 2023-2024 Scientific Committee for the African Virology Network; and doubles as a member of the Scientific Committee for the Middle East, Eurasia & Africa- Influenza Stakeholders Network (ME’NA-ISN) 2022-date. He participates in the African Forum for Research and Education in Health (AFREhealth) Strengthening Interprofessional Education (STRIPE) HIV training from 2022 till date. He was invited as the Guest Speaker/ Presenter at the IRD-WHO Collaborating partner Webinar (2022); and as the international webinar resource person, at Sree Narayana College, Kannur, India at the Post-Graduate and Research Department of Zoology & IQAC in 2020. He has served as the LOC Secretary of the Lagos State University Faculty of Science International Conference (FOSIC) 2022, as the Chairman of the Theme & Abstract Review Committee, FOSIC 2020. He received the University of Liverpool UK-ICN Travel Support to attend the International Conference on Severe Coronavirus Infection at the King Fahad Medical City, Riyadh. The CEPI Global South Travel Award for the 7th World One Health Congress in Singapore (2022). He moderated presentations on innovation in influenza vaccine at the ME’NA-ISN Influenza days in Istanbul, Turkey in 2022. He enjoyed the Lagos State University Conference and Travel Grants (2023, 2022, 2021, 2019, 2018 & 2017), and received the Vice-Chancellor Commendation in 2017. He was a recipient of the European-Scientific Working group on Influenza Young Scientist Award in Riga, Latvia-2017; Selected for the H3ABioNet IBT by the Pan-Africa Bioinformatics Network for H3Africa in 2016; Granted the University training support to the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, the University of Ghana in 2015; attended the 17th SAAR-LOR-LUX Workshop on Virology Research at the University of Lorraine, France, and visited the University of Trier, Germany in 2014. Awarded the FGN-TETFUND PhD Scholarship; UMA-PhD Scholarship; Lagos State Government MSc Scholarship; and the Lagos State Scholarship Awards (2007-2005, 2000-1999). Dr. AA. Anjorin is a member of the World Society for Virology (WSV), American Society for Microbiology (ASM), African Virology Network, and the Nigerian Society for Microbiology. He has published in local and international journals including Vaccines, PLoS One, Viruses, Le Infezioni in Medicina, PAMJ, Tropical Medicine and International Health; and has served as a reviewer for Journal of Medical Virology, Elsevier, Springer-Nature and BMJ.
