- Biography:
- Prof. Petra Obioma Nnamani is a Pharmacist, lecturer and researcher. Petra is currently a humboldtian, a Georg Forster Research Awardee of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung Germany at the Helmholtz-Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS), Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany and also Senior lecturer at the Department of Pharmaceutics, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). She obtained her B. Pharm in 2001 and her M. Pharm in 2004 both from UNN. During her Ph.D 2006-2010, Petra joined the nanotechnology group at ICS-UNIDO in Trieste, Italy from June to December 2009 for Early Research Training in Nanotechnology. She obtained her PhD in Drug Delivery in 2010 from UNN. She was awarded CV Raman International Fellowship for African Researchers at the Department of Physics, Shivaji University, Kolhapur, India in 2012, on her novel work on Prosopis africana seed powder for solid oral pharmaceutical composition which led to her first patent (NG/PT/NC/2014/565). Following a competitive application process, in 2012 she was awarded the TWAS-DFG Cooperation Visits Programme to HIPS, Saarland University, Saarbrücken, Germany in 2013. The title of the research she carried out in Germany was: ‘Development of artemether-loaded nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) formulation for topical application’ published (Int. J. Pharm. 477 (2014) 208–217). She is also a Member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Affiliate member of the African Academy of Sciences, Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) and Pharmaceutical Society of Nigerria. She is co-author of over 80 original papers and reviewer for a number of top journals (>40). She has attended well over 40 local/international conferences with over 40 contributions. She is a recipient of Stars in Global Health Round 4 Phase 1 Award (Ref. S4-0251-01) by the Grand Challenges Canada on “Improving public health of developing countries through use of safe low cost water-aide from Moringa oleifera seed”. This project gave birth to another patent (NG/PT/NC/2014/615) on simple lab-simulated and locally fabricated water purifier as point-of-use treatment of drinking water for the rural South East people of Nigeria. Additionally, research lines of Petra are focused on the development and characterization of biocompatible and biodegradable systems for drug delivery involving micro and nanoparticle systems as well as macro-systems (bioadhesive/polymeric films/patches) for transdermal/oral/buccal application in various disease conditions (malaria, diabetes, infections, inflammation/ulcer and wounds.
