This article, by John E McCarthy, appeared in the Canadian Mathematical Society NOTES in 1999 and was reprinted by the American Mathematical Society. Although the article focuses on the type of mathematics presentation called a colloquium, many of the ideas in it also apply to giving other types of scholarly presentations.
