Back from the CSE Annual Meeting

Creado por Barbara Gastel | May. 24, 2010

Greetings again. I’m now back from the Council of Science Editors (CSE) annual meeting.

This year the meeting theme was “The Changing Climate of Scientific Publishing: The Heat Is On”. The keynote address and another plenary presentation focused on scientific aspects of climate change. Some other sessions dealt figuratively with the climate in which editors work.

The meeting included 8 sets of 3 concurrent sessions each. The topics were so interesting that I had trouble deciding which sessions to attend.

Fortunately, we’ll all be able to read highlights of some sessions: CSE is to post many of the PowerPoint presentations soon, and later Science Editor (the Council of Science Editors magazine) will publish session summaries.

I especially enjoyed a session featuring presentations by the 3 editors who received CSE international scholarships to attend this year’s annual meeting:

  • Augustine O. Okhamafe, from the Tropical Journal of Pharmaceutical Research (in Nigeria)
  • Francis Aba Uba, from the African Journal of Paediatric Surgery (also in Nigeria)
  • A.K.M. Azharul Islam, from the Journal of Scientific Research (in Bangladesh)

The first 2 recipients spoke at the session. The third recipient missed the CSE meeting because of illness, and so the moderator gave his presentation. I was pleased that his presentation mentioned INASP’s Journals Online project and AuthorAID. I hope Dr. Islam is feeling much better now.

Did any of you attend the CSE meeting? If so, I hope you’ll post a comment saying something about it.

Wishing everyone a good week— Barbara
